The coordinated rescue operation,
carried out by troops of 12 Brigade Lokoja and 22 Armoured Brigade Ilorin,
forced the bandits to release their captives after sustained pressure. The
freed victims include 14 males, 5 females, 1 infant, and 4 Chinese nationals,
some of whom had been held for over four months.
According to a statement
signed by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel
Polycarp Okoye, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division and Commander
Sector 3 Operation FANSAN YAMA, Major General C.R. Nnebeife, personally
coordinated the rescue operations and ensured the victims received immediate
medical attention and relief support.
“The Division
remains committed to sustaining the ongoing onslaught against all criminal
elements. There will be no hiding place for bandits within the Division’s Area
of Responsibility,” Major General Nnebeife stated, while sympathising with the
victims.
The victims were
evacuated to a military medical facility for treatment. Many were reported to
be weak and unable to walk unaided due to prolonged torture and exhaustion but
are now responding to treatment and will be reunited with their families upon
full recovery.
The GOC appreciated the air support provided by the air force and commended the synergy of other security agencies in tackling security challenges across Kwara, Kogi and adjoining states. He also charged troops to maintain operational momentum to restore peace and security in the region.
