According to remarks delivered on his behalf by the Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, at the National Symposium on Digital Innovations in Crisis Communication in Abuja, the Minister highlighted that while technology introduces vast opportunities, it equally presents serious challenges that can undermine stability if left unregulated.
The statement noted that as digital platforms evolve, propaganda, disinformation and harmful online narratives continue to escalate during emergencies, posing a grave risk to public order and national security. The Minister emphasised that the construction of narratives in the media, whether internally or externally - directly shapes national perception and influences the country’s image globally.
He commended the Centre for Crisis Communication for convening the session at the National Defence College, describing the symposium as timely and strategic, particularly in today’s fast-paced information ecosystem. He also acknowledged the role of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), security experts, and other stakeholders present at the event.
“It is not only the insecurity that we battle, but also the narrative that frames the insecurity,” the Minister noted, adding that the way these issues are reported carries significant impact. He stressed the necessity for media institutions to adopt technological strategies to enhance early warning systems, improve interagency coordination, and ensure accurate dissemination of life-saving information.
Participants were urged to rally around the national flag in moments of crisis, placing national interest above differences. He further appealed to journalists and strategic communicators to treat fallen military personnel with dignity when reporting, noting that every combatant who pays the supreme price is not just a statistic, but someone’s child or spouse.
The symposium, themed “Leveraging Emerging Technologies to Transform Crisis Communication,” was declared open with assurances that recommendations emerging from the dialogue would support policy enhancement and strengthen Nigeria’s communication framework.
As Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Ndace expressed institutional support for the Centre for Crisis Communication, reaffirming government commitment to responsible narrative shaping and national stability.
