The call was made at the opening ceremony of the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2025, a strategic forum bringing together senior commanders to review operational realities, assess readiness and align future plans with Nigeria’s national security priorities.
At a time of evolving and asymmetric threats, the conference serves as a key institutional platform for drawing lessons from ongoing operations and sharpening the Army’s constitutional role in national defence.
According to remarks delivered by the Honourable Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, the annual conference provides senior leadership the opportunity for honest reflection on operational posture, professionalism and preparedness, while translating strategic thinking into practical responses.
“Nigeria continues to confront a complex security landscape characterised by terrorism, banditry and other asymmetric threats, making adaptive leadership and strategic clarity essential,” the Defence Minister said.
He noted that the outcomes of the conference are expected to yield actionable recommendations capable of enhancing operational effectiveness in 2026 and beyond.
Commending officers and soldiers for their resilience and professionalism, General Musa observed that the operational capacity of terrorist groups and criminal elements has been significantly degraded across several theatres of operation.
He attributed these gains to the courage of troops, improved planning and execution, and the growing impact of coordinated joint and multi-agency operations.
Emphasising the path to sustained success, the Defence Minister said jointness and inter-service cooperation are no longer optional but fundamental to effective national defence, calling for stronger intelligence sharing, coordinated planning and closer collaboration among the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
On troop welfare, he paid tribute to fallen personnel who made the supreme sacrifice and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the care of wounded soldiers and the families of deceased personnel, describing their welfare as a sacred obligation.
General Musa stated that security remains a core pillar of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, assuring that the Ministry of Defence will continue to provide strategic direction, policy support and capability development to keep the Armed Forces professional, responsive and future-ready.
He urged the Chief of Army Staff and senior commanders to ensure that recommendations from the conference translate into concrete operational actions, stressing that strategic deliberations must result in measurable outcomes on the battlefield.
The Defence Minister wished the Nigerian Army a successful conference and reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the defence of democracy and constitutional order.
