President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated General Christopher Gwabin Musa as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, marking a significant recalibration of the nation’s security leadership.

According to a State House press release signed by the Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, the nomination was formally conveyed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, following the resignation of the former minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar.
General Musa, who will be 58 on December 25, is a respected senior officer with a distinguished service record that spans over three decades. He served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 to October 2025 and was the recipient of the Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012.
Born in Sokoto in 1967, General Musa completed his primary and secondary education in the state before attending the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria. He proceeded to the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1986 and graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army the same year as a Second Lieutenant.
Over the course of his career, he held several key appointments including General Staff Officer 1 Training and Operations at Headquarters 81 Division, Commanding Officer 73 Battalion, Assistant Director Operational Requirements in the Department of Army Policy and Plans, and Infantry Representative on the Training Team at Headquarters Nigerian Army Armour Corps.
In 2019, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff Training and Operations at Headquarters Infantry Centre and Corps, Commander Sector 3 Operation Lafiya Dole, and Commander Sector 3 Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad region. By 2021, he had been appointed Theatre Commander Operation Hadin Kai, later becoming Commander of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps before his elevation to Chief of Defence Staff in 2023.
In his letter to the Senate, President Tinubu expressed full confidence in General Musa’s capability to lead the Ministry of Defence and strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture at a pivotal moment for the nation.
