He stated this at the National Peace Committee dialogue on Preventing of Violence and Conflict in Northern Nigeria, held at the National Counter Terrorism Center, Office of the Nationa Security Adviser, in Abuja, Nigeria's capital.
addressinging the participants at the important national dialogue, he described extremism,
false narratives, and deepening mistrust as national dangers that can only be
addressed when Nigerians speak openly with one another and commit to the truth
as a shared foundation for peace.
According to the Sultan during the session, the country must embrace honest
engagement across its divides because, as he put it, “no outsider can help us
if we are not ready to help ourselves.”
The Sultan emphasised
that diversity is an asset, not a fault line, reminding the audience that the
tensions Nigerians often frame as religious are, in reality, conflicts between
individuals, not faiths. He cautioned that Islam rejects extremism and noted
how distorted ideologies have driven kidnappings, killings, and forced
displacement across communities.
He also reflected on
decades of personal experience as a military officer and later as Sultan,
explaining how the spread of extremist violence in Nigeria mirrored the
patterns he witnessed in Pakistan and the Gulf region. “Suddenly we started
seeing bombings here,” he said, urging religious and community leaders to
confront destructive ideologies with knowledge and humility.
The Sultan used the
moment to highlight the importance of listening in leadership. He commended the
National Security Adviser for reaching out across divides and stressed that
real solutions emerge when critics, activists, and government officials are
placed in the same room to air their concerns without fear. “The more you allow
someone to express himself, the better,” he said.
He called on Nigerians to
see material possessions, land, and status as temporary, insisting that
humility and service to others are the true measures before God. “You own
nothing. Be humble and help your brother,” he reminded the gathering.
The Sultan also urged a
strengthening of the National Peace Committee’s role beyond election seasons,
arguing that its moral authority and national spread make it a vital channel
for preserving unity. He urged deeper engagement with the NSA and the presidency
to expand the Committee’s mandate as the ears and eyes of ordinary citizens.
The message closed with a
prayer for peace and guidance, reflecting the tone of a dialogue designed to
confront, with honesty, the roots of violence and the choices required to turn
the tide.
