There have been parambulations as to who will likely fill the vacant position left by the departure of the Defence Minister.

With the closed door meeting between the president and the retired Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa at the villa within hours of the Defence Minister's resignation, discussions on the media circles, analysis among observers have been doing mathematics as to what the outcome of the meeting would be and is expected to be out soonest in the open with some expecting the former CDS to be named in a higher position of authority within the defence circles.

It would be recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday accepted the resignation of Mohammed Badaru, who stepped down from his position with immediate effect, citing health concerns.

But many commentaries in the public space have alluded the resignation to so many issues within the Ministry, or political differences.

A statement issued on Monday by the Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that the former minister tendered his resignation in a letter dated December 1, addressed to the President.

The statement further revealed that President Tinubu, while acknowledging Badaru’s decision, expressed gratitude for his service to the nation.

The President is expected to communicate Badaru’s replacement to the Senate later this week as consultations continue.

Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as a two-term governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.

The former ministers’ exit comes at a time President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, with further details on the scope of the policy expected soon.
