Troops Kill Over 18 Terrorists in Coordinated Dawn Operations, Repel ISWAP Drone Assault in North East

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have killed more than 18 terrorists, recovered heavy weapons, and repelled an ISWAP attack supported by armed drones, reinforcing military control across key areas of Nigeria’s North East, according to operational briefings from the Joint Task Force.

In a coordinated night-dawn surprise operation on 28 January, troops of Sector 1 OPHK struck terrorist positions at Bula Dalo, neutralising over 12 fighters and forcing surviving elements to flee in disarray.

Weapons recovered during the operation included four AK-47 rifles, one PKT anti-aircraft gun, one rocket-propelled grenade launcher, and one multiple grenade launcher, significantly degrading the group’s firepower.

In a follow-up deliberate operation at the Garno terrorist camp, the same sector eliminated six additional terrorists, dismantled life-support infrastructure, and recovered a large cache of PKT anti-aircraft ammunition, further disrupting enemy logistics and sustainment, the military said.

In a related development, Sector 2 OPHK troops at Sabon Gari came under a coordinated ISWAP assault in the early hours of 29 January, involving multiple armed drones. Although the attackers briefly breached part of the defensive position, troops swiftly counter-attacked, held their ground, and restored full control with timely reinforcement from neighbouring units, according to the operational update.

The military confirmed that some soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were killed while defending the location. An excavator and a low-bed truck were also damaged during the drone attack. Exploitation and clearance operations are ongoing to prevent further terrorist activity in the area.

The latest engagements underscore the evolving threat posed by armed drones and the continued pressure on insurgent groups operating across the North East, even as Nigerian forces maintain offensive momentum and territorial control.

The operations highlight sustained military dominance in key theatres while exposing ISWAP’s increasing reliance on drone-enabled attacks, reinforcing the need for expanded counter-UAS capabilities.

Security forces say follow-up operations and area domination patrols will continue to deny terrorists freedom of movement and re-establishment of camps.
