🇳🇬Nigeria Escalates Intelligence-Led Counterterrorism Campaign as Joint Airstrikes Hit ISWAP Positions in Metele

Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations in the North-East are entering a more coordinated and intelligence-driven phase as the Defence Headquarters confirmed fresh joint strike operations with the United States Africa Command targeting ISIS-linked fighters in Metele, Borno State.

The latest operation, according to military authorities, resulted in the elimination of more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters following what was described as the observed convergence and migration of terrorist elements within the area.

The operation forms part of sustained efforts by Nigerian forces to dismantle terrorist regrouping corridors, disrupt insurgent mobility and deny extremist factions the ability to re-establish operational sanctuaries within the North-East theatre.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Defence Headquarters said the coordinated operations were conducted “in close coordination with United States Africa Command.”

“Multiple air strikes were conducted resulting in the elimination of more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters,” the statement disclosed.

The Defence Headquarters linked the latest operation to the recent neutralisation of ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, describing the strikes as part of a wider operational framework aimed at weakening terrorist networks and removing insurgent elements from the battlefield.

“The ongoing operations follow the neutralisation of ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki and are part of sustained efforts to disrupt terrorist networks, remove them from the battlefield and deny the terrorists any safe haven within Nigeria,” the statement added.

The latest strikes reinforce growing indications that Nigeria’s military strategy is increasingly shifting toward precision-led targeting supported by intelligence coordination, aerial surveillance and multinational operational collaboration.

The development also reflects the expanding role of international intelligence partnerships in Nigeria’s evolving counterterrorism architecture, particularly in relation to high-value target tracking and coordinated strike operations.

Metele remains one of the most strategically sensitive operational zones within the Lake Chad corridor due to its proximity to cross-border insurgent movement routes and its long history of terrorist activity linked to ISWAP operations.

Security analysts say sustained pressure on regrouping locations and mobility corridors may signal a broader effort by Nigerian forces to prevent insurgent remnants from reorganising following recent battlefield losses and leadership disruptions.

While military authorities did not disclose the specific platforms deployed during the strikes, the statement projected a continued offensive posture against insurgent elements operating within the region.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to aggressively defend the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the nation,” the Defence Headquarters stated.

“Terrorists who threaten our citizens, communities and national stability will be located and defeated.”

In what appeared to be both a military declaration and strategic warning to insurgent networks, the military further stated that “there will be no safe haven for all terrorists anywhere in Nigeria.”

The renewed offensive comes amid broader efforts by the Nigerian military establishment to integrate intelligence fusion, technology-enabled operations and coordinated air-ground warfare into its evolving national security doctrine as pressure intensifies across multiple theatres of operation.
