The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, made the call during the Omniverse Africa 3.0 Summit in Lagos, where he stressed that future national security would depend on the integration of military capability, technology, industrial capacity and innovation.

From Defence Consumption To Capability Production

Speaking on the theme, “The 70/30 Rule: Why Nigeria’s Security and Innovation Agendas are the Same National Project,” the Defence Minister emphasised the need for Nigeria to transition from a consumer of defence technology to a producer of strategic capabilities.

The Defence Ministry disclosed that ongoing reforms are targeting areas including unmanned systems, robotics, surveillance technology, cybersecurity, secure communications, artificial intelligence and domestic defence manufacturing.

Building A Defence Innovation Ecosystem

General Musa linked the initiative to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that reforms within the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) are aimed at creating an ecosystem where defence investment supports industrial growth, research development and high-tech employment.

He explained that the future security environment requires more than operational courage, but also technological foresight and indigenous industrial capacity.

Defence Futures Lab Opens New Collaboration Pathway

The Minister also launched the Defence Futures Lab Pathway, a platform designed to deepen collaboration between the Armed Forces and Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.

According to the Ministry, the engagement is focused on capability development and strategic planning rather than immediate procurement, with participants expected to develop practical concepts that strengthen Nigeria’s defence innovation agenda.

The forum is expected to reconvene in three months to assess progress and align emerging technology solutions with national defence priorities.
