The position was outlined when the Minister received the executive members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) during a courtesy visit to the Ministry in Abuja, where discussions centred on strengthening cooperation between defence institutions and journalists covering national security.
Minister Positions Media As Strategic Security Partner
General Musa said the changing nature of asymmetric warfare makes credible and timely information an essential component of national security, stressing that the Armed Forces require constructive engagement with the media to ensure Nigerians receive factual reports on defence activities.
He reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to maintaining an open-door policy that encourages professional interaction with defence correspondents while promoting transparency and the timely dissemination of verified information.
The Minister also assured the association that proposals presented during the visit would receive careful consideration, with those considered immediately practicable to be implemented.
Professional Reporting Supports Public Confidence
General Musa urged defence correspondents to remain fair, balanced and professional in reporting security issues, noting that responsible journalism contributes to public confidence in security institutions while supporting national stability.
He observed that effective communication between the military and the media has become increasingly important as security operations extend beyond the battlefield into the information domain.
DECAN Seeks Stronger Institutional Engagement
Earlier, DECAN President, Mr Odita Sunday, congratulated General Musa on his appointment as Minister of Defence, describing it as recognition of his professionalism, competence and distinguished military service.
He announced that the association would confer on the Minister the title of Grand Patron of DECAN during its Conference and Award Ceremony scheduled for October 2026, where the association will also unveil its publication titled "Defence Correspondents."
Mr Odita reaffirmed the association's commitment to responsible, factual and balanced reporting of defence and security issues while commending the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their sacrifices in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.
He further appealed for more regular engagement between the Ministry of Defence and defence correspondents, expressing confidence that stronger institutional cooperation would enhance public trust, promote patriotism and improve Nigerians' access to credible information on defence activities.
