The attempted attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, targeted the FGGC facility currently being used by the Borno State Government as temporary hostel accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno, highlighting the persistent threat posed by ISWAP to civilian and educational infrastructure.
According to Operation HADIN KAI, troops, working alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL), responded immediately after ISWAP terrorists reportedly gained access to the facility with the assistance of suspected collaborators. Military authorities stated that security personnel engaged the attackers with coordinated firepower, while Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force rapidly reinforced the location, forcing the terrorists to abandon the operation and flee without carrying out the planned abduction.
The Theatre Command disclosed that although parts of the school infrastructure were damaged during the exchange of fire, security forces successfully rescued and evacuated all 46 students to Kinnasara Barracks in Monguno, where they underwent medical assessment and received appropriate care. The military confirmed that none of the students was abducted and that all those rescued were medically stable.
Operation HADIN KAI, however, confirmed that some students were fatally struck by the terrorists' sporadic gunfire during the firefight. The Theatre Command extended its condolences to the bereaved families while reaffirming its commitment to protecting civilians and critical public institutions across the North-East.
Military authorities further disclosed that exploitation of the incident is ongoing to identify and apprehend suspected collaborators believed to have facilitated the terrorists' access to the facility. Troops, working with other security agencies, have also intensified efforts to track down the fleeing attackers as part of continuing counter-terrorism operations.
Operation HADIN KAI reiterated that sustained offensive operations will continue to deny terrorist groups freedom of action, dismantle their operational capabilities and strengthen the protection of schools and other critical infrastructure throughout the North-East.
