The Federal Government has placed the security of Nigeria’s commercial and technology ecosystems within the broader national development agenda, with Defence Minister General Christopher Musa (Rtd), identifying a secure business environment as essential to sustaining enterprise, innovation and economic resilience.

General Musa made the position while speaking at the Gala and Award Night marking the unveiling of the “New Face of Alaba” in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he described the transformation of Alaba International Market as evidence of Nigerian enterprise and innovation and commended its emergence as a major centre for electronics and technology.
The Minister’s intervention linked the growth of the market to a wider security imperative: creating conditions in which legitimate businesses, technology enterprises and locally manufactured products can operate, compete and expand without being undermined by insecurity, poor standards or counterfeit activity.
Security as an enabler of economic resilience
General Musa emphasised that the newly developed commercial complexes at Alaba represent more than physical expansion, describing them as a product of the vision, perseverance and commitment of the business community.
He specifically highlighted efforts within the market to promote quality assurance, support locally manufactured products and combat counterfeit goods, measures he said were positioning Alaba as a trusted commercial hub with relevance beyond Nigeria.
The Defence Minister's emphasis places the commercial transformation within an economic-security framework in which the protection of productive economic activity becomes part of the broader responsibility of government.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to providing a safe and enabling environment for businesses to thrive, stressing that sustainable development requires strong partnerships among government, businesses and citizens.
General Musa also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, for his commitment to national security and economic stability.
Alaba’s technology base and national development
Alaba International Market has traditionally been associated with electronics and commercial activity, but the Minister's remarks highlighted its evolving role as a technology and enterprise ecosystem.
He said the market had outgrown the traditional definition of a marketplace, describing it as a critical driver of economic growth, job creation and technological advancement.
That assessment places greater significance on the market’s efforts to improve standards and promote legitimate local production. For a country seeking stronger domestic productive capacity, technology distribution and manufacturing ecosystems such as Alaba’s represent important components of economic resilience.
The Defence Minister therefore urged traders, manufacturers and entrepreneurs to sustain innovation, integrity and excellence while setting standards that demonstrate Nigeria’s capacity to compete globally and create opportunities for future generations.
Lagos government backs infrastructure supporting commerce
The economic-security message was reinforced by the Lagos State Government, which restated its commitment to infrastructure supporting the market.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event by Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, commended the Alaba business community for its contribution to commerce, innovation and employment generation.
The Governor also reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to reconstructing the road linking Alaba International Market, a project expected to improve accessibility, strengthen the ease of doing business and stimulate further economic activity in the area.
The infrastructure commitment provides a practical dimension to the wider security-development relationship: secure and productive commercial environments require not only physical protection but also infrastructure, standards and institutional cooperation capable of sustaining economic activity.
Defence and private enterprise cooperation
The Ministry also referenced the longstanding relationship between the International Market Association Electronics (IMAE) and the Nigerian Army, describing the relationship as one that has endured for decades.
According to the Ministry, that relationship was established with the involvement of General Musa during his early military career.
The Minister congratulated IMAE President General, High Chief Dr Camilus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, and Governor Sanwo-Olu for their respective contributions to the transformation of Alaba.
The event also featured recognition of individuals whose contributions have shaped the development of the market.
For the Defence Ministry, the significance of the occasion therefore extended beyond the unveiling of a commercial development. General Musa used the platform to reinforce the proposition that national security and economic prosperity are mutually reinforcing: security creates the conditions for productive enterprise, while resilient commercial and technology ecosystems strengthen the country's capacity for sustainable development.
