A rapid military response has disrupted the movement of 33 abducted passengers in Zamfara State, with troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA forcing terrorists to abandon their victims before they could move them to an unknown destination.

The operation followed credible information received in the late afternoon of August 8 about the abduction of passengers travelling through the Magazu area of Tsafe Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force (North West) Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, troops responded in conjunction with Nigeria Police Force personnel deployed in Tsafe.
The security forces mobilised towards the reported location and made contact with the terrorists as they were already moving the abducted passengers away from the area.
Troops engaged the terrorists with effective fire, forcing them to abandon the victims and flee into adjoining bushes. All 33 passengers were subsequently secured and rescued without casualty.
The operation has since transitioned from immediate rescue to exploitation of the surrounding area, with troops continuing efforts to track the fleeing terrorists.
The development underscores the importance of timely intelligence in countering terrorist movements across the North-West, particularly where abducted civilians are being moved away from major transportation routes and into areas that can complicate rescue operations.
The Theatre Commander, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, commended the troops for their prompt response and professionalism, while reaffirming the Theatre Command’s resolve to protect innocent citizens, deny terrorists freedom of action and safeguard major transportation routes across the North-West.
The command’s emphasis on transportation routes places the rescue within a wider operational objective: preventing terrorist groups from exploiting vulnerable stretches of the region’s road network to abduct passengers, move victims and establish freedom of movement.
The Joint Task Force also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information on the activities and movements of terrorists and other criminal elements to security forces.
The Zamfara operation therefore adds another operational test to the wider campaign against terrorist mobility in the North-West, with the immediate rescue of all 33 passengers achieved while follow-up efforts continue against the fleeing attackers.
