A magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka coast has triggered Pacific-wide tsunami warnings and a volcanic eruption, raising fears of further aftershocks and coastal damage across several countries.

Authorities in Russia's Far East say several people sustained injuries after the powerful earthquake struck about 119km from the regional capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on Wednesday. According to Oleg Melnikov, Head of the Regional Health Department, those injured—including a hospital patient and residents fleeing buildings—are in stable condition.

The quake unleashed tsunami waves up to 10–15 metres high along parts of the Kamchatka coastline, according to Russia’s Oceanography Institute. A tsunami alert remains in place as the Russian Emergency Ministry warns of aftershocks reaching magnitudes of 7.5 or higher.

In Severo-Kurilsk, the largest city in the Kuril Islands chain, flooding and power outages were reported after authorities declared a state of emergency. The mayor confirmed that although there was no major structural damage, readiness levels remain high.

The quake also triggered an eruption from the Klyuchevskoy volcano—one of the most active on the Kamchatka Peninsula—adding to concerns about seismic volatility in the region.

Far beyond Russia, the seismic event prompted tsunami warnings in Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, and as far as New Zealand. Emergency agencies have urged residents across the Pacific Rim to avoid coastal areas amid fears of ongoing waves and unpredictable surges.
