Tsunami advisories have been issued across the Pacific basin following a seismic event near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, prompting global alerts from Japan to New Zealand.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency raised alarms late Monday after detecting tsunami waves as high as 40 centimeters at 16 coastal locations, stretching from Hokkaido to the fringes of Tokyo. Although no major damage has yet been reported in Japan, officials warn that stronger waves could follow and urged residents in vulnerable coastal regions to stay on high alert.

The ripple effect has triggered widespread concern across the Pacific Rim. In North America, the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center forecasted waves between 30 centimeters and 1.5 meters along parts of the Alaskan, Californian, Oregonian, and Washington coasts. Authorities caution that tsunami impacts may linger for hours, potentially longer.

“Tsunamis don’t come as a single crash — they arrive as a series of powerful surges,” said Dave Snider, Tsunami Warning Coordinator, noting the dangerous accumulation of water as waves approach shorelines.

Evacuation shelters were quickly opened in Hawaii, with school buildings and community centers offering refuge. Late-evening bus services in Honolulu were suspended, and residents in flood-prone zones were advised to head for higher ground. Fire Chief Sheldon Hao emphasized the importance of early evacuation, warning that “waiting too long can turn deadly.”

The U.S. National Weather Service’s Bay Area office issued a sharp warning to the public: stay away from the coast. “Taking selfies with a tsunami puts lives at risk,” officials warned, noting that even small waves can overwhelm beachgoers.

In Canada, the Pacific coast of British Columbia braced for wave activity. Tofino was expected to experience waves by 11:30 p.m., and Langara Island by 10:05 p.m. Authorities have instructed local governments to secure waterfronts, marinas, and beach facilities.

Meanwhile, early damage and evacuations were already being reported on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, closest to the undersea earthquake’s epicenter, signaling the severity of the seismic event and the transoceanic scope of its aftermath.
