Protests erupted across Tunisia as the humanitarian situation in Gaza reaches critical levels.
Hundreds of
demonstrators poured into the streets of Tunis on Sunday, waving
Palestinian flags and chanting anti-occupation slogans in a charged protest
against the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The march,
held in central Tunis, was both a display of pan-Arab solidarity and an
indictment of regional inaction. Protesters condemned Israel’s ongoing siege of
Gaza and took aim at Arab leaders, accusing them of silence and betrayal in the
face of mass starvation and suffering.
“The hunger
in Gaza has reached rock bottom,” said Protester, Lotfi Miloudi, as he
beat an empty cooking pot – a haunting symbol of desperation in the besieged
enclave. “The Palestinian people are starving to death. They are being
deliberately starved—not just by the Zionists, but by some Arab states as
well.”
The marchers
carried placards and banners, calling for an end to what they described as
complicity in Gaza’s suffering. Cries of “Normalization is treason!”
rose above the crowd, a jab at Arab governments that have moved toward
diplomatic ties with Israel.
Protester,
Sondos Gheriani
said, “Arab countries must do more. Protests are important—silence has never
helped. Even if we can’t send money, our voices must be heard.”
The protest
swelled with emotion as demonstrators paused to sing the Tunisian national
anthem, a rare moment of national pride fused with transnational Muslim and
Arab identity.
Among the
prominent figures in attendance was Head of the National Salvation Front,
Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, who joined the protest in a show of political defiance
and solidarity with Palestinians.
One
protester, Loyer Nawel Toumi, launched a fiery rebuke of regional
leaders, shouting: “Sissi is the enemy of God! Gaza is fighting for what? For
religion, for the Prophet, for our land, the land of Islam. He closed the
tunnels after his coup, starving our people in Gaza. Anyone who fights Islam is
the enemy of God!”
As the
demonstrators wound through the capital, walls of the French Cultural Center
were emblazoned with fresh graffiti reading “Free Gaza,” leaving a visible
trace of the march’s message.
With
starvation mounting in Gaza and casualties rising, Tunisia’s streets have once
again become a platform for calls of justice, unity, and resistance against
what many see as both occupation and abandonment.
