Represented
by the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Baptist Theological Seminary,
Kaduna, Reverend John Hayab, at Exercise Haske Biyu in Jaji, Bishop Kukah said
families remain the “foundation of any society,” stressing that the formation
of values in children begins at home.
“Many
parents, due to several factors, are unable to raise their children to be
responsible citizens,”
he noted, adding that poor parenting, coupled with disinterest in schooling and
the lure of quick money, have created fertile ground for unrest.
Citing
Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is
old, he will not depart from it”, he said families play a vital role in
shaping discipline, values, and character, which are indispensable to national
stability.
According to
him, stable homes foster trust, cooperation, and emotional intelligence,
helping children resolve conflicts peacefully and embrace tolerance across
divides. Families, he said, also provide support networks that protect against
vices, reduce violence, and enhance resilience.
Bishop Kukah
linked civic participation to family upbringing, arguing that homes which
instill responsibility inspire children to grow into engaged citizens. He urged
governments to invest in counseling, family support services, and
community-based initiatives, saying stable families are a bulwark against
insecurity.
“A peaceful and secure Nigeria begins at the family level,” he concluded, calling on policymakers, stakeholders, and citizens to prioritise family strengthening as the surest route to national security.
