According to a statement signed by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, insurgents opened fire on the patrol team while they were returning from a successful operation around the fringes of Sambisa Forest but the troops fought through the ambush with superior fire power, forcing the terrorists to retreat in confusion and abandon their mission .
The patrol was led by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General M Uba, and included troops of 25 Task Force Brigade and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force.
The statement stressed that two soldiers and two CJTF members paid the supreme price during the encounter.
Lieutenant Colonel Anele noted that circulating online reports alleging the abduction of the Brigade Commander were entirely false, urging members of the public to disregard the fake narrative and rely only on verified information from official military channels.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, commended the troops for their courage and resilience. He said their sacrifice in one of the most dangerous theatres of conflict is a reminder of the daily risks borne by service men and women to keep Nigeria safe.
