He announced this in a personally signed statement on Wednesday,
acknowledging the current security situation as a national emergency that
demands swift and decisive action.
According to the
statement released by the Presidency, the Nigeria Police Force is now
authorised to recruit an additional 20,000 officers, raising the total number
of new recruits to 50,000. The President also instructed that trained forest
guards under the Directorate of State Security Service be immediately deployed
to flush out terrorists and bandits hiding within forest areas across the
country.
The President disclosed
that police authorities are now permitted to utilise National Youth Service
Corps camps as training depots, while officers being withdrawn from VIP guard
duties will undergo crash training for redeployment to security-challenged
areas.
“I have decided to
declare a nationwide security emergency and order additional recruitment into
the Armed Forces. The police and the army are authorised to recruit more
personnel. The police will recruit an additional 20,000 officers, bringing the
total to 50,000. The DSS also has my authority to deploy all trained forest
guards to flush out terrorists and bandits. There will be no more hiding places
for agents of evil,” President Tinubu stated.
He reassured Nigerians
that the Federal Government is increasing boots on the ground, especially in
high-risk areas. He urged citizens to support the nation’s security forces,
stating that the times call for unity and shared responsibility in safeguarding
peace and stability.
The President commended
the leadership and rank and file of the Armed Forces for their courage and
sacrifice. He further charged troops to uphold discipline and integrity,
stressing that compromise, collusion or negligence will not be tolerated.
He also highlighted
recent successes achieved by security agencies, including the rescue of 24
schoolgirls in Kebbi and 38 worshippers abducted in Kwara State. He emphasised
that efforts will continue until the remaining students from the Catholic
school in Niger State and all other citizens still in captivity are safely
released.
