According to a statement issued by the Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President gave the directive during a security meeting held on Sunday in Abuja with the police leadership, the Air Force and Army chiefs and the Director General of the Department of State Services.
He said police personnel withdrawn from VIP protection duties will be redirected toward core policing responsibilities, particularly in underserved and remote communities. VIPs requiring protection are to apply for armed security from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
President Tinubu noted that many remote areas are operating with insufficient police personnel, making it difficult for security agencies to protect citizens effectively. He stressed the need to boost police presence nationwide, citing current challenges.
To enhance manpower capacity, the President has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers. He also confirmed that the federal government is partnering with state governments to upgrade police training facilities across the country.
The security meeting was attended by the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and the Director General of the Department of State Services Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
