That strategic direction is reflected in the commencement of the Skill Acquisition Training for Veterans (SAT-V) for the North Central geopolitical zone and the Federal Capital Territory, an initiative designed to strengthen the post-service welfare architecture of the Armed Forces of Nigeria by preparing veterans for sustainable livelihoods after military service.
Organised by the Veterans Affairs Directorate of the Defence Headquarters, the four-day programme, taking place from 14 to 17 July at Headquarters 22 Brigade, Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, goes beyond conventional welfare support by focusing on economic resilience as a critical component of veterans' well-being. The initiative seeks to equip retired personnel with entrepreneurial and technical skills capable of creating alternative income opportunities while reducing dependence after retirement.
Declaring the programme open, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, represented by the Director of Veterans Affairs, Major General O.D. Williams, described the training as a strategic investment in the men and women who dedicated their careers to the defence of Nigeria. He noted that empowering veterans with practical skills reinforces the Armed Forces' enduring responsibility to those who have completed active service while enabling them to remain productive contributors to national development.
The programme, themed "Enhancing Veterans' Capacity Building Through Sustained Skill Acquisition Training for Enhanced National Development," reflects a growing recognition that veterans possess valuable experience which, when complemented by entrepreneurial and vocational competencies, can continue contributing to the country's socio-economic growth beyond the military environment.
General Oluyede further linked the initiative to his leadership philosophy, which places improved welfare and sound administration among the key priorities of his tenure. He encouraged participants to maximise the opportunity by embracing the practical knowledge and vocational training offered, noting that the skills acquired would strengthen personal livelihoods while supporting broader national development objectives.
Beyond its immediate training objectives, the initiative signals an evolving approach to military welfare in which retirement planning is increasingly integrated into defence administration. Rather than limiting support to pensions and traditional welfare schemes, the Armed Forces are placing greater emphasis on economic empowerment, recognising that financial independence remains an important element of the long-term well-being of retired personnel.
As the Armed Forces continue to modernise personnel management, programmes such as the Skill Acquisition Training for Veterans illustrate a broader institutional commitment to ensuring that service to the nation extends beyond military careers into meaningful participation in Nigeria's economic development.
