The engagement formed part of activities marking the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL 2026), where the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, hosted a cocktail reception for visiting military delegations in Port Harcourt, projecting the Nigerian Army's growing emphasis on defence partnerships alongside operational readiness.
Military Diplomacy Beyond Ceremony
Welcoming the visiting delegations, Lieutenant General Shaibu described NADCEL as more than a commemorative military event, portraying it instead as an important platform for strengthening strategic relationships, exchanging operational experiences and expanding professional military engagement among partner armies.
He observed that the increasingly complex security environment demands stronger institutional relationships capable of supporting collective responses to terrorism, insurgency, transnational organised crime and other emerging threats confronting nations across regions.
According to the Army Chief, sustained military dialogue strengthens mutual understanding, builds confidence among partner forces and creates opportunities for practical cooperation beyond formal diplomatic engagements.
Shared Security Requires Shared Solutions
The Nigerian Army maintained that no single military can effectively confront evolving security threats in isolation, particularly as criminal and terrorist networks increasingly exploit porous borders, technological advances and regional instability.
Lieutenant General Shaibu stressed that knowledge sharing, interoperability and professional collaboration have become indispensable tools for enhancing operational effectiveness and improving collective security across the international defence community.
The reception therefore served as another avenue for strengthening relationships built on shared professional values, operational trust and long-term strategic cooperation.
NADCEL Reflects Nigeria's Broader Defence Diplomacy
The gathering brought together Chiefs of Army and senior military leaders from several countries, reinforcing Nigeria's continued effort to expand defence diplomacy while maintaining strong regional and international military partnerships.
Beyond commemorating 163 years of the Nigerian Army, the week-long NADCEL 2026 programme has increasingly reflected Abuja's intention to position the Army as both an operational force and an active contributor to international security cooperation.
The cocktail reception underscored that military engagement today extends beyond battlefield coordination to include institutional partnerships capable of improving preparedness, strengthening interoperability and supporting collective responses to global security challenges.
As geopolitical competition, terrorism and organised criminal networks continue to evolve across continents, Nigeria's defence leadership appears increasingly convinced that sustained military diplomacy will remain an essential complement to operational capability in advancing national, regional and international security objectives.
