The measures formed part of a wider engagement with veterans in the North East geopolitical zone, where the Defence Headquarters used the consultation to address welfare concerns and provide updates on initiatives intended to sustain support beyond active service.
According to a statement issued by the Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the CDS gave the assurance on 20 August 2026 during an interactive engagement with veterans in Yola, Adamawa State, the second in a series of planned zonal consultations across the country.
Addressing concerns over salary and pension adjustments, General Oluyede explained that the ongoing exercise is inclusive and that, in line with existing policy, adjustments to the emoluments of serving personnel have consequential implications for veterans' pensions.
The CDS also highlighted collaboration with the Bank of Industry to facilitate access to low-interest loans for business enterprises involving serving and retired personnel and their families. He further disclosed that the ongoing construction of the Defence Hospital will reserve a percentage of its patronage for veterans.
The initiatives, according to the Defence Headquarters, have the backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration has provided resources to support measures aimed at recognising the sacrifices of serving and retired military personnel.
The engagement also provided veterans with an opportunity to present additional welfare concerns directly to the CDS. Veteran leaders, including the President of the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers Association, Major General HA Salihu (Rtd), participated in the consultation.
The engagement reinforces a broader personnel-management approach in which military welfare extends beyond active service, linking veterans' pensions, healthcare and economic opportunities to the institutional responsibility of sustaining the welfare of those who served.
