ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – July 28, 2025

As global hunger rates rise and climate change continues to strain agricultural systems, African leaders and the United Nations have launched a renewed call for urgent, coordinated action to transform food systems and combat food insecurity.

At the opening of the 2nd United Nations Food Systems Summit in Addis Ababa, Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, said the continent must embrace innovation and partnership to secure its food future.

Nigeria, he said, is deploying artificial intelligence, satellite climate data, and geospatial tools to revolutionize agriculture and ensure no citizen goes hungry.

“A broken food system anywhere diminishes the dignity of humanity everywhere,” Shettima declared, urging a united African front to tackle hunger, poverty, and the effects of climate change.

Nigeria’s reforms, including a Presidential Initiative on Food Security, target the cultivation of key staples like maize, rice, cassava, and wheat. The country is also investing in agro-industrial zones with support from the African Development Bank and IFAD to boost rural development and job creation.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed underscored the need for predictable concessionary financing to support agricultural transformation, infrastructure, and literacy. He warned that food insecurity and environmental degradation are closely linked.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in a video message, noted that while progress has been made since the first food summit in 2021, global hunger is again on the rise due to climate shocks and economic instability.

He emphasized the need for food systems rooted in justice, sustainability, and human rights.

Leaders from Italy, Kenya, and various multilateral organizations echoed the call for deeper collaboration, technology-driven solutions, and long-term investments to create resilient and inclusive food systems.
